Summer 2025: Fraud update

Fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to target individuals and gain access to personal and financial information. From sophisticated scams to moments of distraction, the tactics used are varied and often unexpected.

To help you stay secure, we have outlined several key areas of concern, along with steps you can take to protect yourself.

Password hygiene – your first line of defence

A strong password remains one of the most effective barriers against fraud. Unfortunately, poor password habits are still one of the leading causes of account compromise. Here is how you can help keep your passwords secure:

  • Use unique, complex passwords for each account – and avoid reusing them.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication wherever possible for an extra layer of security.
  • Regularly review and update your passwords, particularly for email and banking apps.
  • Consider a reputable password manager to securely store your credentials.

One effective method is to use three unrelated words, including a mixture of capitals, numbers and special characters.

Distraction fraud – stay alert, even in familiar situations

Distraction fraud is a technique used by criminals to steal personal items or financial information by diverting a person’s attention. The two most common types are:

  • ATM distraction: A fraudster will create a diversion – such as dropping something, causing a scene, or pretending to help – whilst an accomplice steals the victim’s card or cash during a transaction.
  • Shoulder surfing: The criminal will closely observe the victim entering their PIN or phone passcode, often leading to the theft of a mobile phone or bank card which can then be used fraudulently.

Important: It is vital you use different passcodes to your mobile device and your Weatherbys Card App.

Bank impersonation

Bank impersonation fraud involves a criminal posing as your bank, usually claiming to be calling from the Weatherbys fraud, cyber or security team. These fraudsters can spoof the genuine Weatherbys number. They will use professional language and will already hold limited personal details and potentially your debit card details. They then use this information in an attempt to gain your trust.

Important red flag: If you ever receive an unexpected call claiming to be from the Weatherbys fraud team, this will in all instances be a scam.

Card app blocking

In the event of suspected fraud or a misplaced card (including it being swallowed at an ATM), we encourage you to use the Weatherbys Card App to place a block on your card. This is a temporary precaution and can be removed once it has been confirmed your account is secure.

If you believe you have fallen for a scam or divulged any sensitive information including personal or account details, please contact your private banking team or relationship manager as soon as possible.
